Best LLM in 2026: The Right Model for Each Job
By Amjid Ali · · 8 min read

In this article
The best LLM in October 2026 depends on the job. For coding and agent work, Claude Opus 5.5 leads the independent boards; for hard reasoning and long documents, Gemini 4 Argon and GPT-6 Astra are the strongest; for cheap, high-volume work, GPT-6 Luna and Claude Haiku 5.5 both cost $0.10 per million input tokens; and for open weights, DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash and Qwen3.8 lead. No model wins everything, and the gaps at the top are small.
Updated October 2026. Every price and spec below comes from the vendor's own page, linked in the sources.

A few notes the table can't hold:
- OpenAI's naming. GPT-6 is a family, not one model. Astra is the flagship, Sol the mid tier (GPT-6.1 Sol replaced GPT-6 Sol as the recommended version on 29 September) and Luna the small, fast one. In ChatGPT, paid plans chat with GPT-6 Sol and Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna. Our GPT-6 Sol vs Luna guide covers the split.
- Anthropic's naming. Claude Fable 5.1 sits above Opus at $10 / $50 "for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agentic work," but Anthropic's docs recommend starting with Opus 5.5 "for most workloads."
- DeepSeek V4.1. The only V4.1 models DeepSeek ships are the Flash versions. Its API flagship is still DeepSeek-V4-Pro.
- Gemini 4. Argon is the only Gemini 4 model so far. Google says it is "looking forward to bringing you the rest of the Gemini 4 family."
What the leaderboards show (October 2026)
Leaderboards measure different things, so read them together and never treat one as the answer.
LMArena text ranks models by blind human votes on chat answers. On 16 October 2026 (8.8 million votes, 416 models) the top five were Gemini 4 Argon (High) at 1524, marked preliminary, Muse Wonder (Max) at 1509, Claude Opus 5.5 (High) at 1508, Claude Fable 5 (High) at 1504 and Claude Opus 4.6 (High) at 1503. GPT-6.1 Sol (Max) was 22nd and GPT-6 Astra (Max) 30th, which says more about what voters prefer in chat than about raw capability.
LMArena WebDev ranks models on building web apps. On 17 October 2026 the order was Claude Opus 5.5 (Max) 1807, GPT-6 Astra (Max) 1777, Claude Sonnet 5.5 (xHigh) 1768, GPT-6.1 Sol (Max) 1755 and Claude Fable 5.1 (Max) 1741. Gemini 4 Argon was ninth (preliminary).
Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index combines many evaluations into one score. When we checked on 18 October 2026 (the page shows no date), Claude Opus 5.5 (max) led on 58, with Claude Sonnet 5.5 (max), Opus 5.5 (xhigh) and Meta's Muse Wonder Full (max) on 56. GPT-6 Astra (max), Gemini 4 Argon (high) and Claude Fable 5.1 were on 53.
Vendor benchmark tables disagree with each other, because each lab picks its own sets and settings. Google's own table puts Gemini 4 Argon ahead of GPT-6 Astra and Opus 5.5 on DeepSWE v1.1 (77.9%) and the Vals Index (68.9%); Anthropic's puts Opus 5.5 at 66.4% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, which Google's table also shows as the highest of the four. Treat vendor numbers as claims and run your own tests.
The best LLM for each job, explained
Coding and agents: Claude Opus 5.5
Anthropic says Opus 5.5 "leads in agentic coding, computer use, and knowledge work," and the independent boards agree for now: first on LMArena WebDev and first on the Artificial Analysis index. Its sibling Sonnet 5.5 scores 70.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 in Anthropic's own table, higher than Opus 5.5's 66.4%, at half the price. GPT-6 Astra is the closest rival, and OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol "matches GPT-6 Astra" on DeepSWE v1.1 at about a fifth of the cost. If you pick by tool rather than model, see Claude Code vs Codex vs Cursor.
Hard reasoning, maths and science: GPT-6 Astra (or Gemini 4 Argon)
OpenAI calls Astra "the world's most intelligent and aligned model" and reports, at maximum effort, 96.0% on GPQA Diamond and 97.6% on FrontierMath Tier 4. Google describes Gemini 4 Argon as "our flagship reasoning model, built for complex software engineering," deep maths and science, and Argon reaches the same Artificial Analysis score as Astra (53) at a lower cost per task ($1.99 against $3.26 on that page). Astra is the pick when the problem is hard and the bill doesn't matter; Argon is the better value.
Writing and everyday chat: Gemini 4 Argon
Human preference is the right measure for writing, and Argon tops LMArena's text board, though only by a few points and with a preliminary rating. Claude Opus 5.5 and Muse Wonder are within the margin. In practice, style is personal: give the same brief to two or three models and keep the one whose drafts need the least editing. Our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini comparison covers the apps you'd use for this.
Long documents, video and audio: Gemini 4 Argon
All the frontier models now have a context window of about 1 million tokens, so the difference is in what you can feed them. Argon accepts text, images, video, audio and PDF, and its long-decode mode can write up to 1,048,576 output tokens. GPT-6 and Claude 5.5 models take text and images. If your "document" is a two-hour recording or a stack of scanned PDFs, Argon is the simplest choice. See our full Gemini 4 Argon guide.
Cheap and fast: Claude Haiku 5.5 or GPT-6 Luna
Both cost $0.10 input and $0.50 output per million tokens (Haiku's price rises to $0.50 / $2.50 for prompts over 100,000 tokens). Anthropic calls Haiku 5.5 "the cheapest, fastest, and most capable small model we've ever released," and its own table shows Haiku ahead of Luna on Terminal-Bench 4.0 (39.2% against 16.4%) and GDPval-AA. That is Anthropic's comparison, so test both on your own prompts. DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash is in the same price band and adds open weights. Read our Claude Haiku 5.5 review for details.
Open weights: DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash, Qwen3.8, Muse Spark Open
- DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 (17 October 2026) is MIT-licensed, has a 1M-token context and, by DeepSeek's own numbers, scores 77.0 on DeepSWE v1.1. It is a large mixture-of-experts model (the model card lists 763B parameters), so it needs server-class hardware to self-host.
- Qwen3.8-27B is a dense 27B model under Apache 2.0 with a 262,144-token native context. It is the most practical strong model for a single machine.
- Muse Spark Open (816B total, 42B active) is Meta's first open-weight frontier model. Its licence is Meta's own Muse Model License, not an open-source one, and it needs "at least 700GB of VRAM" in NVFP4. Meta says it is optimised to run on two Mac Studios with M5 Ultra.
- Mistral Large 4 is a 1-trillion-parameter model with 52 billion active parameters; Mistral says the weights arrive "by the end of the month," but has not yet named the licence.
How to choose the right LLM
- Start from the job, not the leaderboard. Write down the three tasks you'll do most (for example "refactor TypeScript," "summarise contracts," "answer support tickets").
- Shortlist by budget. For a flagship, compare Opus 5.5, GPT-6 Astra and Gemini 4 Argon. For volume, compare Haiku 5.5, GPT-6 Luna and DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash. Note that Gemini 4 Argon's API price doubles on 1 December 2026.
- Check hard constraints. Do you need open weights, data to stay on your hardware, video input, or a specific cloud (AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud, Azure)?
- Run a 20-prompt test. Use your own real prompts, run each through two or three models, and score the answers blind. This takes an afternoon and beats any benchmark.
- Count total cost, not list price. A model that uses fewer tokens or needs fewer retries can be cheaper than a lower list price. Prompt caching cuts repeated input costs on every major API.
- Re-check every quarter. Every model in the table above was released in the last two months.
The bottom line
If you want one model for serious work in October 2026, Claude Opus 5.5 is the safest all-rounder, with Gemini 4 Argon close behind and cheaper until December. Pick GPT-6 Astra for the hardest reasoning, Haiku 5.5 or GPT-6 Luna for volume, and DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash or Qwen3.8 when you need weights you control.
