What is AI Overviews?

Also called AI Overview, Google AI Overviews, SGE, Search Generative Experience ·

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google Search shows above or among the regular results for some queries, answering the question directly with Gemini and linking to the web pages that support the answer.

How it works

AI Overviews grew out of Google's Search Generative Experience experiment and launched broadly in the US at Google I/O in May 2024, before expanding to more countries and languages. When someone searches, Google decides whether a generated summary would add value; its documentation says AI Overviews appear only when its systems determine they are "additive to classic Search". When one is shown, a Gemini model writes a short answer grounded in pages from Google's index and shows links to supporting sources beside or within it.

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a query fan-out technique: running several related searches across subtopics to build the answer, which is why they can cite pages that would not rank for the original query.

Why it matters for publishers

Google's guidance is direct:

  • Eligibility: a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. There are no extra technical requirements.
  • No special markup: Google says no special schema.org markup, AI text files or new machine-readable files are needed. Normal SEO practice applies: helpful, people-first content, text that is crawlable, good internal links.
  • Controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what appears; robots.txt controls Googlebot crawling.
  • Reporting: clicks and impressions from AI features are counted in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type, not shown separately.

For users, AI Overviews can save time but can also be wrong, like any generative AI output, so checking the linked sources matters for important decisions.

Example

A search for "how long to boil an egg" may show an AI Overview at the top: a few sentences giving times for soft and hard-boiled eggs, with links to the cooking sites it drew from. A publisher whose page is cited there earns a visible link even if its page is not the first blue link.
